Thiru Kochi Buses Flagged Off

Putting an end to the monopoly of private buses in the city, KSRTC started 50 buses in the city. Transport Minister Jose Thettayil flagged off the 50 buses which have been named as ‘Thiru Kochi’ at a function held in Kochi on July 16.

32 buses would operate from Ernakulam depot and the remaining 18 would operate from Aluva depot. Thus there would be a Thirukochi bus in the Ernakulam-Aluva route every 10 minutes and every 30 minutes in other routes.

“It was after considering the long-standing demand by the Kochiites that the KSRTC decided to start its city services. The people here had been at the receiving end of the frequent strikes and rude behaviour of the private bus workers,” Thettayil said.

Mayor Mercy Williams called upon members of the public to utilize the new city buses, so that there is less number of two-wheelers and cars on the roads. “These services would boost public transport in Kochi since the private buses in service are overcrowded.”

Apart from saving time, money and reducing pollution, this would also save considerable amount of fuel. Passengers of these buses who want to reach the city hub can rely on the Thirukochi city buses, which would act as feeder services to the city. More AC and non-AC buses would be introduced in Kochi.

The buses would also conduct service in the Ernakulam-Cusat and Ernakulam-Ponekkara routes.

The buses would ply a total of 233 trips daily, of which 123 would be in the Ernakulam-Aluva route.

The following are the list of 18 routes of the Thirukochi buses.

Aluva-Aroor temple (buses would ply through both Padma and Menaka, Thopumpady, Edakochi);

  2. Superb ! Buses are excellent and the crew is very friendly. My wife who traveled today said that the crew are new and do not yet know the stops en route :) Only little complaint is about the unimaginative name.

  3. My best wishes to Thiru Kochi services.

But all the present laws applicable to Private Bus (some call them Red Killers) must be applicable for Thiru Kochi services too. There are many punching stations in city (Kaloor, Ravipuram, Menaka, Kalamassery) This time punching must be made mandatory to Thiru Kochi services too.

The time schedule of all the city services must be re-arranged and all services must follow the time schedule. There should not be any preferences to Thiru Kochi. All are doing the same business. So it must be on a common ground.

Line traffic rules must be made mandatory for Thiru Kochi services too. Legal actions taken against private bus drivers to be taken against Thiru Kochi drivers who violate the city traffic rules.

Students concession to be implemented in all Thiru Kochi services at the earliest.

  4. Dear team,
The design of the bus is not suited for city services. They could make it like bmtc city service with wider sliding doors (driver operated). That will reduce time delay and it is more safe for passengers

  5. The name Thiru Kochi has no connection with the city of Cochin. Sad KSRTC opted for this name. Thiru Kochi is the name given to the predecessor of Kerala State, after merger of Travancore and Cochin states. Kochi Fast itself would have been a good name.

Also, KSRTC should not look at the profit while running this bus initially. They should have chosen routes not infested with private buses. Eg, there are only two private services to Panampilly Nagar, which has become an iportant commercial centre. More buses should have been allotted to there. Also, Trippunittura-Fortkochi - there is no direct bus.

Regarding the livery, KSRTC should have gone for a red based livery. People in Kochi are used to red Line Buses. People think this is an FSLS service and dont get into it. I saw this many times yesterday. Be more creative. This blu livery was created during Ganesh Kumar age. They should have redesigned it

Anyway, hope more KSRTC buses are allotted to Kochi and the arrogance of red killers are reduced. All the best

  6. It is nice to see city buses in Cochin - a very big relief from the rashly driven private buses.

My only big concern is the utilization of the JNNURM buses. I can guarantee that within a couple of months the utilization of these buses-especially the non-ac buses would suffer a lot!!

  8. small doors .. not suitable for city services.
They could have atleast learnt from the low floor buses they've introduced that city buses need to have wide doors for easy get in - get out.

    Where's the common sense?

  9. I have a complaint. The ThiruKochi buses does look gloomy. Kochi is a vibrant city, so the appearance of city buses should be matching with that. Please, please add some more colours to the bus body and make it look smart and colorful. All the very best to ThiruKochi Service!

  11. Please stop the comments regarding the doors. These buses are started as Mofussil services (Ordinary buses), not as city service. But they have given the name Thiru Kochi and made it as city service, just to overcome the problems regarding getting the new permits.

Also they have started these services immediately because, the very next day was Karkkidakam 1st, and it is not good to do something good in that month. Also they can't wait till Chingam to start this.

There are some rules for building buses,
For city services, they buses should be of 2x2 seating basis, that is what the reason these buses came like that, but the govt has given some exception for these buses, to start mofussil services with 2x2 seats.

For mofussil services, the seats should be 2x3 depends on the length of the bus.

Also our people are used to the doors of ksrtc, so there is no need to made the buses like BMTC, but if they are doing like that, it is good.

Who said that ksrtc workshop people doesnt know to make buses like that? I have seen many buses which is building with middle door (which can control by driver) for RTO in central workshop. So that too doesn't make any sense.

  13. All the Best for this Bold step of KSRTC.
I personally feel KSRTC could have chosen some good name.
Once they are stable in these routes may be they can put low floor city buses by pulling these buses to other routes.

  16. With the introduction of the Thiru Kochi Buses, the Cochin-ites have a special experience in their life.
    They see :
Bus drivers who do not think they drive a formula one in a championship
Bus drivers who do not honk when there is a red-light
Bus drivers who care for their fellow citizens.

Conductors who talk with a great deal of manners.
Conductors who behave with an explicit level of decency with the ladies
Conductors who do not abuse when they are given a currency note of a higher denomination.
Buses which do not speed away at a school bus stop.

    V R loving it.

    Long live Thiru Kochi

  17. I always had a dream..that is KSRTC becoming a profitable company. KSRTC taking a huge loan and buy 400 buses and start operating in Cochin, gradually cancelling the private bus permits in the city. At the end of the dream I could see KSRTC making huge profit!!

With Thirucochi buses in the city I am sure my dream will come true one day!! All the best to Thirucochin bus service.
